The call comes in almost word for word every time: "I put in a used amplifier from a matching car. Now only the left side works. Did I get a bad unit?"
Almost certainly not. The amplifier is probably fine. Your car has recognised that this module came from a different VIN and has deliberately switched most of it off. That's component protection — and once you understand it, half the mystery of used-module swaps disappears.
What component protection actually is
Component protection (Volkswagen Group calls it Komponentenschutz) is an anti-theft system that operates on modules instead of the whole car. The idea is simple: make stolen parts worthless. If a control unit can only function in the specific vehicle it was married to, there's no resale market for parts stripped out of a stolen car.
Mechanically, it works like a handshake. Your car's gateway and immobilizer hold a record of which modules belong to this VIN. Each protected module holds its own copy of that identity. On every startup the modules check in. When one answers with a VIN that doesn't match, the car doesn't throw sparks or refuse to start — it just quietly disables that module's functions.
Component protection is not a fault. Nothing failed. The car is working exactly as designed — it's protecting itself from a part it believes was stolen. Which is why no amount of unplugging the battery, clearing codes or "letting it relearn" will fix it.
Why it half-works — the amplifier case
Here's the part that confuses everyone. Component protection usually doesn't kill a module outright. It degrades it. So you get symptoms that look like a hardware fault:
- Amplifier: sound from one side only, front speakers but no rears, very low volume, or audio that works for a minute then cuts out
- MMI / head unit: screen lights up and menus work, but no sound, no navigation, no phone, no radio
- Instrument cluster: gauges sweep and work, but warning messages, mileage display or comfort readouts are dead
- Reversing / 360 camera: black screen or "camera unavailable" with a perfectly good camera
- ACC radar & driver assistance: cruise control unavailable, lane assist greyed out
- Comfort module: windows, mirrors or central locking working partially
- Steering column / electric steering: assistance reduced or warning lamp on
People then do the natural thing: they assume the used part is faulty, send it back, and buy another one. The second one behaves identically — because the second one is also from a different VIN. We've had customers go through three amplifiers before someone told them what was actually happening.
On many VAG cars you can see it directly: scan the module and it reports component protection active, or the MMI displays a component protection message on the screen. That's the car telling you plainly. Most generic scanners won't surface it.
Which modules are protected
It varies by brand, model year and options, but broadly the protected list covers anything worth stealing or safety-related:
- MMI / infotainment head units and navigation units
- Amplifiers (Bose, B&O, Burmester, Harman)
- Instrument clusters and virtual cockpits
- Engine and transmission control units
- Comfort / convenience modules
- ACC radar, cameras, driver-assistance modules
- Electric steering racks and steering column modules
- Gateways and immobilizer components
It isn't only a VW and Audi thing
Component protection is the VAG name, but every manufacturer has its own version of "this part is married to this car." The vocabulary changes; the wall is the same:
- Volkswagen · Audi · Škoda · SEAT — component protection (Komponentenschutz), cleared through factory online adaptation
- Mercedes-Benz — SCN coding plus FBS immobilizer pairing; a replacement module has to be coded to the car before it runs correctly
- BMW — modules paired via ISN and the FEM/BDC or CAS; a used DME or cluster won't simply drop in
- Porsche — coding and adaptation through PIWIS, with immobilizer-linked units
- Dodge · RAM · Jeep — Security Gateway blocks the write access needed to configure modules on 2018+ vehicles
- Ford · GM — anti-theft/PATS-linked modules requiring programming to the VIN
So "the used part doesn't work properly" is not a VAG quirk. It's the modern reality of automotive electronics across the board.
Why the dealer route is painful
Officially, clearing component protection is an online operation. The dealer connects with factory software, authenticates against the manufacturer's servers with credentialed access, and performs an adaptation that re-marries the module to your VIN.
Which is fine — if the dealer will do it. In practice owners run into:
- Flat refusal on used parts. Many dealers will only adapt a module bought from them, at new-module prices.
- Sell you a new module instead. A used B&O amplifier might be $250; new plus programming can be well over $2,000.
- Wait times. Weeks for an appointment for what is a short software job.
- Second-hand market shut out entirely. Which is exactly what the system was designed to do — it just also catches honest owners.
How we clear it
We do this work with dealer-level software and bench tooling, and the approach depends on the module and the car:
- Identify and verify first. We check the part number, hardware and software index of your used module against what your car actually needs. If it's the wrong variant, no amount of coding will make it right — better to find out before the work starts.
- Read and back up. Full read of the module's data before anything is modified. If your original module is still readable, that data is gold.
- Adapt to your VIN. The module's stored identity is rewritten to match your car, and the car's gateway is updated so both sides of the handshake agree.
- Virginize where needed. Some modules are best returned to a factory-fresh state first, then coded to your vehicle as if new.
- Clone as an alternative. When your original module is dead but readable, we copy your complete data onto the donor unit. It then is your module electronically — same VIN, drop-in, no adaptation required.
- Code the options. A module also has to be coded for your car's equipment — speaker layout, amplifier variant, camera package, market. This is what people miss when they get protection cleared but the part still behaves oddly.
- Verify. Full scan, function test, fault memory clear. On an amplifier that means actually listening to every channel.
A fair amount of our bench work is cleaning up after cheap "component protection removal" attempts. Typical outcomes: a module written with data for the wrong hardware index, a half-completed adaptation that leaves the gateway and module disagreeing, a bricked cluster, or a car that now won't start because the immobilizer got involved. We can usually recover it — but you'll pay for the recovery and the original job.
Buying a used module: how to not waste money
Most failed swaps are decided before anyone touches the car — at the moment the wrong part is bought. Before you click buy:
- Match the full part number, not just the first few characters. The hardware and software index at the end matters.
- Match the equipment level. A base amplifier and a B&O amplifier are not interchangeable. Same for cluster variants, camera packages and market regions.
- Prefer the same model year range. Mid-cycle updates change protocols more often than you'd think.
- Ask whether the donor car was intact. Modules from flood or fire cars are a gamble regardless of coding.
- Keep your original module. Even dead, it may be readable — and cloning your own data is usually the cleanest path.
- Send us the part number first. We'll tell you in a message whether it'll work on your VIN. That five-minute check saves people hundreds regularly.
Is removing component protection legal?
Adapting a module to a vehicle you own, so your car works properly, is legitimate repair work — it's the same operation the dealer performs, and it's the reason right-to-repair rules exist. What we won't do is help move parts of unknown origin: we work on your vehicle, adapting parts to your VIN, and we document the work.
Nothing about this alters vehicle identity, mileage or emissions equipment. The module ends up doing exactly what the factory intended — in your car.
The short version
If a used module went in and only half of it works, stop buying replacements. It's almost never a faulty part. The car is refusing an unfamiliar VIN, and the fix is software: adapt it, clear protection, code it to your equipment — or clone your original data onto it and skip the argument entirely.
